A specialised knee and hip arthritis program that carefully integrates:
► Joint muscle strengthening
► Land based and range of motion exercises
► Pain management strategies
► Improved nutrition and weight loss
► Monitoring and engagement strategies
The program aims to help reduce joint Pain, Stiffness and swelling so you can:
> get back to doing more of the things you enjoy
> manage your daily living functions more easliy. For example:
||go up and down stairs
||get in and out of a car
||put on socks / stockings
> (where relevant) improve fitness for joint replacement surgery and enhance preparation for post surgery rehabilitation.
Clinical eligibility (for a fully funded program)
The complete program is available FREE to eligible members who meet ALL of the following criteria:
> Current or historical diagnosis of knee or hip osteoarthritis supported by radiological evidence (eg. x-ray or MRI) or an incidental finding from a previous arthroscopy, AND
> Have a body mass index (BMI) ≥28 (Check your BMI here)
> According to medical opinion, AT LEAST ONE of the following:
- Knee or hip osteoarthritis symptoms that have (or are likely to in the foreseeable future) necessitated referral to an orthopaedic surgeon for further investigation or evaluation for an initial or second joint replacement procedure OR
- An existing knee or hip joint replacement that has developed symptoms such as pain, swelling, instability or warmth and could benefit from weight loss, improved fitness and muscle strength OR
- A knee or hip joint replacement procedure is planned and weight loss, improved fitness and muscle strength prior to surgery is desirable.
Hospital policy criteria (for a fully funded program)
> Have a hospital cover product (policy) that has been held for at least 12 months with the current fund (that does not restrict or exclude joint replacement surgery - if you are not sure please contact your health fund)
> Obtain approval from their medical practitioner to participate and maintain medical supervision for existing medical conditions
> Are willing to provide their progress data (including weight, waist circumference, joint pain scores, blood pressure and cholesterol)
> Have NOT previously participated in this program or any other Healthy Weight for Life program offered by their health fund
> Other health fund specific criteria may apply
At the completion of your online registration a letter and GP / Specialist Approval Form will be emailed to you immediately.
You will need to print a copy and take it to your GP. If they approve of your participation in the Program please ask them to complete and sign the approval section on the last page and return it to the Healthy Weight For Life team for processing.
