KicStart™ VLCD

Portion Control

KicStart™ VLCD is a complete meal in the form of a shake or soup and is used as a short term intensive portion control tool.

By replacing a normal meal with a KicStart™ VLCD, a bigger reduction in the total 'energy in' (measured in kilojoules or calories) can be achieved than can normally be achieved with a self prepared meal.

This significant reduction in 'energy in' can help accelerate or "kick start" initial weight loss whilst satisfying hunger and maintaining the essential intake of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and trace elements.

As you move through the 3 phases of the Osteoarthritis Healthy Weight for Life™  program, the number of meals replaced with KicStart™ is gradually reduced to zero as you progressively build up the new sustainable healthy eating and lifestyle habits you will need to keep your weight under control for life.

Why KicStart™?

KicStart™ VLCD has been carefully formulated to strict medical standards. Some of the key features of its formulation are

  • A unique combination of dairy proteins to satisfy hunger and protect muscle mass while you are losing weight.
  • Soluble dietary fibre to help satisfy hunger for longer, help reduce cholesterol absorption and reduce the risk of constipation.
  • 26 different vitamins and minerals, including essential electrolytes and trace elements, to ensure nutritional balance, good health and vitality.
  • Low in sugar - to help regulate your blood glucose levels.
  • Low in saturated fat - shown to be detrimental to heart health.

Government Guidelines - Intensive interventions to support weight loss

The Australian government guidelines suggest multicomponent interventions that address nutrition, physical activity and psychological approaches to behavioural change are more effective than single component interventions.

The guidelines also suggest more intensive weight management interventions—such as very low-energy diets (e.g. KicStart), may need to be considered as adjuncts to lifestyle approaches, especially when a person has a BMI > 30 kg/m2, or a BMI > 27 kg/m2 with risk factors and/or comorbidities, or has been unsuccessful reducing weight using lifestyle approaches.

More specific details can be found by going to Section 6.2 Intesive Interventions (page 46) of the Australian Government NHMRC Clinical practice guidelines for the management of overweight and obesity in adults, adolescents and children (2013). View guidelines here.

Australian Obesity Management Algorithm

Developed by a working group with representatives from the Australian Diabetes Society, the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society and the Obesity Surgery Society of Australian and New Zealand.

The aims of the algorithm are to:

  1. assist general practitioners (GPs) in treatment decisions for non-pregnant adults with obesity
  2. provide a practical clinical tool to guide the implementation of existing guidelines for the treatment of obesity in the primary care setting in Australia.
